North Devon
|
Meshaw, South Molton
- Fern Tor
Fern Tor is a beautiful home in twelve acres of undeveloped natural grounds, and it's ideal
for touring the beaches and moors of the North Devon Coast, as well
as Exmoor and mid-Devon. The property offers three twin and double rooms in
a high quality guest annex with all rooms en suite with both bath
and shower. Lovers of big beds will be delighted to know all the double beds are all
larger than normal - 5 feet wide in the ground floor
room and 6 feet wide in the first floor double room, which can also
be let as a twin room. The house is warm and
fully centrally heated in all rooms, with a log fire in the lounge.
There is a lot of information available about the area and a large
selection of books to read.
The five acres of grassland which
surround the property have been awarded a Countryside
Stewardship grant: there are many wildflowers, butterflies and
wildlife. The remaining seven acres are home to the owners' animals and organic fruit and vegetables.
They offer gourmet
vegetarian and vegan meals using excellent home-grown organic produce. There's a varied and innovative menu for the evening
meal, with non-dairy puddings if you wish, while breakfast offers a large vegetarian
or vegan choice.
The owner, Jane, is a Cordon Vert cook who is able to cater for special diets:
dinner is served at separate
tables by candlelight! The owners say: "All the guests who come here rave about the
quality of the meals,
and Jane is trying new ideas all the time!"
Breakfast is a selection of fresh and
cooked fruits, cereals, including delicious home-made granola,
porridge, and a
full cooked breakfast with succulent tomatoes, flavoursome mushrooms,
beans, potatoes, delicious free-range eggs (from the owners' hens), vegan
sausages and home-made bread, scrambled tofu, vegan pancakes, and
the speciality of the house, a Fern Bocker Breakfast!
The evening menu uses organic vegetables
and the house's own produce wherever possible. It's a fixed menu,
with items such as pea soup and olive and spring onion dips with crudities
to start;
Mediterranean tart and aduki bean pie for mains; and puddings such
as banana and mincemeat tart. There are also some sticky puddings
and the famous FernBocker Glory, but for guest who prefer to eat
more modestly in the evenings,
there is a 2 course dinner, if
booked in advance. Most of the wonderful organic veggies are from
Riverford Farm in Devon.
Guests are
welcome to bring wine and beer, though the house offers organic non-alcoholic
drinks. Children and pets are welcomed, but read this
page first:

Chillaton
-Tor Cottage
This small award winning hotel offers
Bed and Breakfast (with supper trays of local delicacies if evening
food is required). It's a unique place on
the edge of Dartmoor, set in twenty eight acres of its own grounds,
a small luxury hotel full of
romance and charm. The owners will make your visit a memorable one
with a welcome trug of sparkling wine, champagne
truffles, fresh fruit and flowers. All accommodation is ensuite, and
you have
the chance to swim in the heated outdoor swimming pool
in summer!
All the rooms have a
different theme: the Garden Room
has an
antique double bed,
a beamed and vaulted ceiling, and a pleasant and cosy sitting area
with a real log-fire. Craftsman's Deco is another garden room with a
six feet wide super king bed. This delightful bed sitting room has
an intriguing style with an Art Deco theme, complete with
authentic furnishings, a cast iron wood-burning stove and a private
conservatory and terrace. The Craftsman's Garden is stylish and
elegant, with lovely soft furnishings and drapes surrounding a window seat
looking down the valley. The
fireplace offers a log-fire, there's a comfortable sitting area, and French
windows open onto a private terrace and garden. This is a very
private room, with access to the stream. The Cottage Wing is a private
wing of Tor Cottage, located upstairs, with a view over the valley. The double bedroom is
very "cottagey", and has a wonderful
king size bed. With a private sitting room and a spacious en-suite
bathroom, this is a truly romantic option. Laughing Waters is a
truly tranquil and romantic retreat furnished in
New England genre. It boasts a double bed with American patchwork
quilt, en-suite shower room and a cosy sitting area with two sofas.
The garden rooms have winter log fires and a
private terrace and gardens; the woodland accommodation boasts hammocks by the stream,
and for the kids there's a gypsy caravan to play in. For the
enjoyment of all there's a barbeque area.
The hallmark here is peace, luxury and tranquillity. It's a private hideaway
located right in the centre of Devon and Cornwall.
Tor Cottage welcomes guests to share the
ambience of this very tranquil, unique and special place. A friendly welcome
can be followed by dinner at a superb local restaurant or Inn, or by a
delicious tray supper for you to enjoy in the secluded
privacy of your room or on your private terrace. Breakfasts are lavish
affairs with a whole range of local produce. Vegetarian options are always
available and the house is happy to cater for any special diets.
The house does not accommodate children or pets.
